In the lead-up to a corruption hearing, former MP Daryl Maguire, embroiled in controversy following his relationship with ex-NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian, allegedly fabricated a cover story regarding a multimillion-dollar property deal. It is claimed Maguire anticipated a share of the $48 million transaction he facilitated for a Chinese client. Currently, he stands not guilty of providing misleading evidence to the NSW Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) during a July 2018 hearing.

As court proceedings unfold, prosecutor Phil Hogan highlighted contradictions in Maguire’s statements concerning his expectations of compensation from the property sale in Campsie. The court was presented with a covertly recorded conversation where Maguire seemed to suggest altering commission rates, indicating an expectation of payment.

Just days before the ICAC hearing, evidence suggested Maguire strategised his testimony, asserting he never requested or received any financial benefit tied to the deal. Hogan described this fabricated account as misleading, aiming to bolster Maguire’s defence.

This case is part of broader investigations into local council corruption, linking several figures, including Hawatt and property developer Charbel Demian, who also deny wrongdoing. The hearing is set to continue.
