In a dramatic turn of events reminiscent of a post-apocalyptic film, Dezi Freeman, Australia’s most wanted fugitive, was shot dead by police after emerging from a shipping container in a remote area of Victoria. This occurred almost seven months after Freeman fatally shot two police officers, during which time he reportedly lived off-grid, utilising solar power and scrounging for sustenance.
The police operation commenced at 5:30 am, culminating in a tense standoff that lasted three hours. Authorities used a BearCat armoured vehicle to breach the container where Freeman was found, accompanied by flashbangs and smoke grenades. Following a tip-off from someone close to Freeman, police had been surveilling the Thologolong property near the NSW border, believed to be his hideout.
Friends and acquaintances of Freeman expressed suspicions that he had received assistance during his time in hiding, with one stating, “He couldn’t have done all this on his own.” This sentiment was echoed by Victoria Police Chief Commissioner Mike Bush, who noted the makeshift living conditions at the property, complete with a makeshift kitchen and evidence of companionship, even though no one else was present during the hours leading to his death.
At approximately 8:30 am, Freeman emerged from the container nearly naked and wrapped in a blanket, brandishing a firearm he had stolen from the deceased officers. This prompted the police to take immediate action, resulting in his death due to the perceived threat he posed.
Authorities are now conducting a thorough investigation to determine who may have helped Freeman evade capture and provide him with resources during his lengthy evasion. As Bush remarked, it’s critical to establish the extent of support he received and ensure that any accomplices are held accountable.
The property where the standoff occurred was messy and littered with various vehicles, hinting at a makeshift lifestyle. Freeman’s life on the run came to an end in a violent confrontation, leaving questions unanswered regarding any potential accomplices in his survival.
