The racing community in Melbourne is in mourning following the tragic death of Peta Tait, a renowned stablehand and former amateur jockey, who was fatally injured by a horse at the Cranbourne Training Centre. The incident occurred around 7:30am yesterday morning when Tait, 43, suffered a kick to the head. Despite immediate medical attention from an on-site paramedic, she could not be revived.

Busuttin Racing, the stable where Tait worked, expressed deep sorrow in a heartfelt Facebook post, describing her as a beloved team member. The trainers, Trent Busuttin and Natalie Young, extended their condolences to Tait’s family, friends, and colleagues, highlighting the strong personal and professional bonds she maintained within the racing community. They acknowledged her longstanding dedication to her work and the legacy she leaves behind.

Tait’s impressive career began at 16 as an amateur “picnic” jockey, culminating in 48 race victories and over 120 placings. Notable wins included the Hinnomunjie Cup in 2013 and the Cranbourne Corinthian in 2019, marking her final race ride. Beyond her jockey career, Tait dedicated 20 years to working as a trackwork rider and strapper for Racing Victoria.

Racing Victoria remembered Tait as a cherished figure in the picnic racing scene. CEO Aaron Morrison reflected on the alarming nature of her accident as a reminder of the many unsung heroes in the racing industry who provide essential care to racehorses daily. He also noted that Tait’s unwavering love for horses greatly shaped her career, impacting numerous trainers over her remarkable 25-year involvement in Victorian racing.

Support has been promised to Tait’s colleagues and employer amid this loss. Neil Bainbridge, chief executive of Southside Racing, shared his sorrow on behalf of the organisation, acknowledging Tait’s popularity and the significant void her passing creates within the community. He recognised her dual role as a cherished picnic jockey and a diligent trackwork rider for varying trainers throughout Cranbourne and Gippsland.

Meanwhile, the Victoria Police have commenced an investigation, with a report for the coroner being prepared. WorkSafe is also involved to determine the circumstances surrounding the accident. In response to this tragedy, Racing Victoria is offering counselling and support to Tait’s family and the wider racing community, encouraging those in need to access the confidential counselling service STABLELINE at 1300 530 122.
