Allan Alaalatoa is poised to help Taniela Tupou regain his best form for the Wallabies this season. The two tighthead props share a friendship despite competing for the crucial No. 3 jersey. With 58 Tests under his belt, 29-year-old Tupou faces off against the more seasoned Alaalatoa, aged 31, who boasts 80 caps and is regarded as one of the most experienced players in Joe Schmidt’s squad.
Both players have endured the challenges of recovering from ruptured Achilles tendons, a tricky injury particularly demanding for tightheads, who must anchor scrums. Alaalatoa, who missed out on the 2023 Rugby World Cup due to his injury, spoke candidly about the psychological hurdles he faced during his recovery. He emphasised the importance of regaining confidence in match situations, particularly under pressure.
Alaalatoa’s experience includes a severe rupture that left him carted off the field during a scrum against the All Blacks. However, he now appears to be in excellent form following a successful season with the ACT Brumbies, potentially making him a starter in the upcoming series against the British and Irish Lions.
On the other hand, Tupou has struggled to regain his previous dominance since suffering his Achilles injury in late 2022. He has openly discussed the confidence issues he faced during his time with the NSW Waratahs. Teammate Angus Bell has highlighted the essential role Tupou must play if Australia hopes to challenge the Lions team, reinforcing Alaalatoa’s belief that a happy Tupou brings immense value to the team.
Alaalatoa has extended his support to Tupou, emphasising the responsibility of teammates to create a positive environment that enhances performance. As the Wallabies prepare for their clash with Fiji, they are hopeful for Tupou’s contribution, with Alaalatoa indicating that trust in both Tupou and the coaching staff is pivotal.
Coach Joe Schmidt, acknowledging the time constraints of the approaching matches, expressed a desire to assess Tupou’s readiness as the squad assembles in Sydney. With the Lions’ tour set to begin against Argentina before their match in Perth against the Western Force, the Wallabies will rely on the combined strength and determination of their tighthead props to excel in this competitive series.
