Deputy Leader of the Victorian Liberal Party, Sam Groth, has addressed accusations regarding the misuse of a taxpayer-funded vehicle for personal travel from the 2024 Australian Open to his home on the Mornington Peninsula. This follows a report stating that he allegedly utilised a chauffeur-driven car associated with Liberal MP Georgie Crozier to transport himself and his wife from Rye to the Australian Open in Melbourne this January.

In his response, Groth clarified that he attended the tournament in both an official capacity and for personal reasons. He firmly denied any inappropriate use of the vehicle and stated that all engagements were conducted transparently, claiming that everything was officially disclosed and there was nothing to hide. He expressed the importance of maintaining public trust in the behaviour of politicians and acknowledged public expectations for appropriate conduct.

Groth emphasised that his role as Shadow Minister often involves attending various sporting events, where he meets stakeholders and participates in fundraising initiatives. Additionally, he refuted any claims suggesting he was intoxicated during the tennis event.

Despite the controversy, Opposition Leader Brad Battin indicated that he would discuss the issue internally but does not believe Groth should resign. Battin expressed his expectation for all Members of Parliament to adhere to rules of conduct both inside and outside of their official duties. He acknowledged Groth’s hard work and active engagement within the community, asserting his confidence that Groth has adhered to regulations and guidelines regarding his activities.

As Groth continues to navigate his responsibilities as a politician and family man, he reiterated the significant demands of his role, which often keeps him away from his wife and twin boys. He conveyed that he takes every opportunity to spend time with his family when possible, even if it necessitates covering expenses personally.
