Scott Pendlebury, the celebrated Collingwood Magpies games record holder, has agreed to extend his contract for another year, enabling him to compete until 2026. This extension comes during a challenging period for the team, marked by a slump in form and worries regarding their ageing roster. At 37 years old, Pendlebury is preparing for his 21st season with the club, having already played 421 matches in the black and white colours, putting him just shy of Brent Harvey’s VFL/AFL games record of 432.

Pendlebury is appreciated not only for his performance on the field but also for his professionalism and leadership, qualities that Collingwood’s list manager, Justin Leppitsch, strongly endorses. Leppitsch expressed that Pendlebury’s presence will significantly benefit the younger players and contribute to setting the team’s standards moving forward. “His professionalism is second to none, always ensuring he sets himself up to get the best out of himself and his teammates,” Leppitsch stated.

Collingwood has faced a turbulent patch recently, losing four out of five matches, which includes a heavy 64-point defeat to Hawthorn. Given this downturn, commentators have raised concerns about the age of the squad, as the Magpies currently field the oldest list in the league. A month ago, Collingwood was riding high at the top of the AFL ladder, but their recent slump has seen them drop to third place, attributed to a mix of on-field challenges and player availability.

Prominent figures, including Cats legend Jimmy Bartel, have called for patience, suggesting managing veteran players’ workloads could be behind the team’s struggles in recent weeks, noting that Pendlebury has occasionally been used as a substitute.

This new contract follows closely on the heels of Darcy Cameron’s three-year extension, solidifying his commitment to Collingwood until the end of 2029. Additional veterans are also anticipated to sign extensions in the near future, highlighting the club’s focus on stability and experience.

Looking ahead, the Magpies will aim to reverse their fortunes in an upcoming crucial match against the Adelaide Crows. With tight competition for standings, a loss could potentially see them slip out of the top four, leading to the risk of an elimination final.
