Erin Patterson has been convicted of three murders and one attempted murder, resulting in a life sentence with a non-parole period of 33 years, as determined on September 8. The 50-year-old has 28 days to file an appeal against her sentence or conviction, with the deadline set for midnight on October 6. Although Patterson’s defence did not indicate any immediate plans to appeal during her sentencing, legal analyst Justin Quill speculated that pursuing an appeal was likely. He noted that Patterson has the financial resources, time, and a strong incentive to challenge the verdict.

To initiate an appeal, Patterson’s legal team must present valid grounds, including potential legal errors, unreasonable verdicts, or claims of injustice. Should the appeal be deemed justified, it will be considered by judges in the Court of Appeal, who possess the authority to overturn the original sentence or conviction if they find sufficient cause. However, it is also possible that her sentence could be increased if the appeal proceeds. Should the appeal be granted, the Court of Appeal has the power to adjust Patterson’s sentence either upwards or downwards.

This high-profile case continues to attract attention as Patterson navigates the legal complexities following her conviction.
