Australian cricket icon David Warner is set to make his debut in the upcoming season of The Hundred, having signed with the London Spirit. The 38-year-old previously secured a contract with Southern Brave in 2020, but the season was ultimately scrapped due to the COVID-19 pandemic, preventing him from participating.
Despite not finding a spot in last season’s Hundred or the IPL 2025 mega auction, Warner’s new chapter will see him reuniting with former coach Justin Langer. Known for his impressive IPL career, Warner has accumulated over 6,500 runs, boasting a strike rate of 140 and an average exceeding 40. His addition is expected to bring excitement to the competition, especially as he returns to a familiar setting – the Lord’s cricket ground – where he famously stumped England’s Jonny Bairstow during the Ashes.
Sam Billings, captain of the Oval Invincibles, expressed enthusiasm about Warner’s arrival in The Hundred, stating that any competition featuring Warner is enhanced by his involvement. He highlighted the invaluable insights he has gained from Warner regarding gameplay and leadership qualities.
Warner’s contract with London Spirit is reported to be worth approximately $247,000 AUD, making him one of the lower earners among the tournament’s top players. Comparatively, England’s Jamie Overton has signed a deal in the upper echelon, earning about $410,000 AUD, alongside fellow players Noor Ahmad from Afghanistan and New Zealand’s Michael Bracewell.
The Hundred’s new season kicks off on August 5, and Warner’s participation is highly anticipated by both fans and players alike. His return to form in this innovative format will be closely watched, as he seeks to leave a significant mark following a challenging period in his recent playing career.
