In a thrilling semi-final at the Champions Trophy, New Zealand secured their place in the final with a significant 50-run victory over South Africa, propelled by outstanding centuries from Rachin Ravindra and Kane Williamson. The Black Caps will now face India in the final on Sunday in Dubai, after India claimed victory over Australia in the other semi-final thanks to Virat Kohli’s impressive innings.
Ravindra, aged 25, showcased his talent by scoring 108 runs from 101 balls, marking his fifth ODI century at an ICC tournament. Meanwhile, Williamson contributed a solid 102 off 94 deliveries, helping New Zealand post a tournament record total of 6-362 in their allotted 50 overs. Their batting effort surpassed Australia’s previous tournament record of 355 runs, set against England.
Despite remaining unbeaten during the group stage, South Africa faced disappointment once again in the knockout phase. Needing 99 runs from the last three overs, David Miller emerged as the standout for South Africa, scoring an unbeaten 100 runs and hitting 48 runs in a final onslaught that included seven boundaries and two sixes, taking their total to 9-312. Rassie van der Dussen and captain Temba Bavuma provided crucial support with scores of 69 and 56, respectively, but it wasn’t enough to change the outcome.
New Zealand’s bowlers, led by Mitchell Santner with figures of 3-43, ensured that South African batsmen struggled against their spin attack, with support from Glenn Phillips, Ravindra, and Michael Bracewell.
This victory at the Gaddafi Stadium marks New Zealand’s third win at the venue in a month, following successes against Pakistan and South Africa in warm-up matches. Santner expressed his satisfaction, noting the solid foundation laid by Ravindra and Williamson which allowed the team to control the game’s later stages.
Bavuma acknowledged the challenge posed by New Zealand’s performance, admitting that while they had some partnerships, they ultimately fell short against the pressure exerted by the Black Caps.
The stage is now set for a highly anticipated final as New Zealand aims to clinch the championship against India.
