The family of 63-year-old Jessie Billy, who lost her life during the North Queensland floods, is mourning her passing. Jessie tragically died when an SES boat capsized on February 2, amid severe flood conditions. Fortunately, five other individuals on board, including her extended family, were rescued.
Jessie’s daughter, Littiah Billy, shared that the last conversation she had with her mother was filled with hope as Jessie called to report she was being rescued. Littiah was left devastated upon receiving a call with the tragic news of her mother’s death. Describing her mother as possessing a "massive heart," Littiah reflected on Jessie’s warmth, generosity, and faith, stating that she always comforted those around her despite her struggles.
In honour of her mother, Littiah is making arrangements for Jessie’s body to be transported to Thursday Island, where she will be laid to rest alongside her ancestors. Littiah expressed her desire to give her mother a beautiful farewell, emphasizing the love and care Jessie had for everyone in her life. An investigation by the police is currently underway, and a report will be submitted to the coroner.
