Benji Marshall has firmly rejected the North Queensland Cowboys’ request to release Api Koroisau, the Wests Tigers’ captain and star hooker, who has a year left on his contract. According to The Sydney Morning Herald, a Cowboys official reached out to the Tigers with hopes of signing Koroisau to fill the gap left by Reece Robson, who is expected to join the Roosters.
Marshall made it clear that parting ways with Koroisau is not on the agenda. He stated, “Why would we let a world-class hooker go 12 months early? We have zero interest [in letting him go], none at all. And that will not be happening while I am the coach.” He emphasised Koroisau’s importance as a leader within the team, explaining that he is a pivotal figure in the club’s plans and future.
The Cowboys believe acquiring Koroisau could facilitate their efforts to re-sign Lachlan Galvin by freeing up salary cap space. However, Marshall argues that retaining Koroisau is crucial not only for the immediate success of the team but also for the development of young talent Tallyn Da Silva. He pointed out that Da Silva benefits from having Koroisau as a mentor, stating, “Tallyn is in a fortunate position where he gets to learn off one of the best in the game, develop and take his time.” Marshall highlighted that hookers generally reach their peak around the ages of 24 to 25, indicating that there is no rush for Da Silva to take over the position.
In conclusion, Marshall reasserted his commitment to the club’s best interests, saying, “What’s best for the club is we keep Api.” The Tigers are set to face the Knights in Newcastle on Sunday.
