The Queensland government is nearing a decision regarding the construction of a new stadium for the 2032 Brisbane Olympics, following the release of a crucial venues report last weekend. The report recommends establishing Victoria Park as the site for the new Olympic stadium, a finding that was first reported by 9News three weeks ago. In response, opponents of the proposal have begun preparing legal challenges against any developments in the park’s green space.
In addition to the Victoria Park stadium plans, there are discussions surrounding an alternative venue at Albion, with organisers refining their proposal for this option. It is also reported that there is consideration for relocating the Athletes’ Village from Hamilton to Bowen Hills, adjacent to the Brisbane Showgrounds. This new precinct would be developed through a public-private partnership with Lendlease, which previously developed the Olympic Village for the 2012 Games. Stakeholders believe that a village closer to Victoria Park offers better resale opportunities compared to a site in Northshore Hamilton.
Recently, Swimming Australia was consulted about the prospect of moving swimming events from the Brisbane Live Arena to a different venue. There is also a proposal to relocate the Brisbane Live Arena to the former Goprint site near the Gabba, which would provide easier access via the Cross River Rail. Tennis Australia has similarly been briefed on potential plans for holding tennis matches at Tennyson.
With only a little over two weeks left to finalise decisions on the venues, the state government is actively contemplating these options. However, Premier David Crisafulli had previously pledged not to construct a new stadium, which adds an extra layer of complexity to the ongoing discussions. The successful navigation of these plans and any legal challenges will be crucial as Queensland gears up for the upcoming Olympic Games.
