Trainers from both the North Queensland Cowboys and Penrith Panthers have faced repercussions from the NRL due to their involvement in a controversial incident during a recent match. The scandal erupted following a high-stakes game that ended in a dramatic 30-all draw, where footage emerged of Cowboys trainer Mitch Dunn and Panthers trainer Shane Elford spraying water on the Steeden ball, allegedly to influence play.
Referee Todd Smith noted Dunn’s actions during the second period of golden point, expressing clear annoyance at what he considered an unsporting tactic. Football legend Billy Slater described it as a “cheeky” move, highlighting the uproar it created within the rugby league community.
In a statement issued by the NRL, it was clarified that while there are no explicit rules against altering a ball’s condition, the conduct displayed by the trainers was a breach of acceptable match-day protocols. In response, both clubs have been handed fines of $10,000 and issued with breach notices. Furthermore, the trainers have received two-game suspensions, with one of those suspensions being deferred.
The NRL reiterated the need for clubs to adhere strictly to the guidelines surrounding trainer responsibilities during matches. A statement emphasised that any infringement of these rules could lead to further penalties. Both teams have been given a five-day window to respond to the allegations.
As the Cowboys prepare to face the Sea Eagles in their upcoming match, the Panthers will take a bye. This incident serves as a reminder of the need for sportsmanship and compliance within the league, ensuring that both players and officials maintain the integrity of the game.
