Australia’s largest youth survey has highlighted the primary concerns of young people in the Northern Territory. While environmental issues and crime remain important, the rising cost of living has become the foremost worry, with 56% of young Territorians citing it, a significant leap from 31% last year.
Dr. Paul Royce, regional leader at Mission Australia, noted that traditionally, climate change and mental health were key issues, but now financial pressures dominate. The concern over violence and crime has also increased, rising to 25% from 18%, while awareness of environmental issues has dropped to 27% from 38%.
This surge in cost-of-living anxiety compounds challenges faced by young individuals, who are already balancing studies and work. According to Royce, many find it increasingly difficult to afford essentials like rent, food, and medication.
In light of these challenges, there’s a growing demand for enhanced support systems, including calls for increased youth allowances, JobSeeker support, and improved Commonwealth rent assistance.
