In a heated Super Rugby matchup on Friday night at GIO Stadium, Morgan Turinui expressed his outrage at the officiating after the ACT Brumbies suffered a critical blow in their 33-31 loss to the Crusaders. A key moment occurred in the 75th minute when Crusaders winger Sevu Reece was adjudged to have played the ball when it had clearly been knocked on. New Zealand referee James Doleman allowed the game to proceed, claiming the ball had touched Reece’s foot, a statement Turinui vehemently disputed.

The missed call proved costly as Crusaders hooker George Bell capitalised on the situation, scoring the decisive try shortly thereafter. The outcome of the match held significant implications, with the Crusaders clinching second place and the Brumbies finishing third heading into the finals.

Turinui was vocal about the errors, stating that while protocols govern when the TMO may intervene, it was a glaring oversight given the referee’s unsighted position. He chastised both Doleman and assistant referee Fraser Hannon for failing to rectify the mistake, labelling the officials’ performance as below the standards expected in Super Rugby. The incident not only cost the Brumbies the match but also denied them a crucial home semi-final, underscoring its impact on their path in the competition.

Despite the disappointment, Brumbies coach Stephen Larkham remained composed in acknowledging that mistakes are part of the game, noting that both teams had experienced dubious calls throughout the match. He highlighted that referee focus on the breakdown might have contributed to missed opportunities elsewhere on the field.

The match itself was an intense affair, with both teams scoring four tries; however, Reece’s decisive drop goal, the first by a winger in Super Rugby since 2012, ultimately tilted the balance in favour of the Crusaders.

As the Brumbies prepare for their upcoming playoff, they are also left to contemplate injuries, particularly to star centre Len Ikitau, who exited the game limping. Meanwhile, earlier that day, the Chiefs secured top position on the ladder with a resounding victory over the Highlanders.

With the final round of games approaching, the outcomes are crucial for teams vying for playoff advantages, ensuring a dramatic conclusion to the Super Rugby season.
