Concerns are mounting that a highway overpass in Queensland may remain closed for over a year following the incident involving a wind turbine component getting lodged under the Mount Crosby Road Bridge at North Tivoli on the Warrego Highway early Friday morning. Although the turbine part has been successfully removed, residents of Ipswich express anxiety about the lengthy closure of the overpass.

Currently, the westbound lane of the Warrego Highway is shut, while the eastbound lane remains open, but the future of the overpass is uncertain. Ipswich Mayor Teresa Harding highlighted that the closure is significantly affecting local residents and freight companies operating in the southeast Queensland region. She mentioned that commuters face an additional 30-minute detour when travelling in either direction, exacerbating the situation.

Community anxiety has increased as Harding noted that similar incidents in the past have led to extended repair times, with some closures lasting over a year. She emphasised the need for timely communication from the Department of Transport and Main Roads regarding the issue.

The incident occurred when a truck driver reportedly failed to adhere to the directions of pilot and escort vehicles on an off-ramp intended for the transportation of wind turbine parts destined for the Wambo Wind Farm project. Consequently, the turbine section became stuck under the bridge. The logistics company, Qube, is cooperating with authorities while the driver has been taken to hospital for assessment.

This unforeseen accident is not only causing logistical disruptions but also stirring up broader concerns within the community about the potential duration of the overpass’s unavailability. Local authorities are urging prompt updates from the transport department to provide clarity and manage expectations for those affected.
