Pope Francis, aged 88, is facing serious health challenges due to a polymicrobial respiratory tract infection, as announced by the Vatican, signalling the need for ongoing hospitalisation. Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni reported that this infection involves a mix of pathogens, including viruses and bacteria, and has required adjustments to the pope’s medication. Francis, who has a history of lung issues, including a previous lung removal and recurring bronchitis, was admitted to Rome’s Gemelli Hospital in a “fair” condition after his bronchitis deteriorated.
Currently, the pope’s symptoms are complex, necessitating a significant hospital stay. Despite this, he has been able to maintain some of his daily activities, such as breakfast and reading the news, and has even kept in touch with the parish priest in Gaza during this challenging time.
Medical experts have expressed concern regarding Francis’s recovery due to his age and existing health problems, which limit the body’s ability to respond to treatments. His hospitalisation has already forced the cancellation of several Vatican events, with the official calendar now resuming on March 5. Supporters, including nuns outside the hospital, are praying for his health, highlighting the challenges posed by his rigorous responsibilities amidst declining health.
