Eels coach Jason Ryles has justified his decision to leave Dylan Brown out of the squad for the upcoming match against the Raiders in Canberra. Last week, Ryles had Brown play as a hooker, shifting him to the bench before finally deploying him at lock during the game against the Panthers.

When the teams were announced for round 20, Brown was not included in the Eels’ line-up, with Ryles opting to give Joash Papalii a chance at five-eighth. Brown is set to join Newcastle next season on a substantial 10-year deal worth $14 million.

Former Panthers player Mark Geyer voiced his discontent on 2GB, suggesting the Eels were dismissing their prospects by dropping Brown so early. He commented that this decision was frustrating for fans and supporters.

In response, Ryles acknowledged the rationale behind promoting Papalii but stressed that winning should always take precedence. Geyer and former coach Brad Fittler echoed similar sentiments, arguing that fans pay to watch the team’s highest-paid players, urging Ryles to utilise Brown effectively.

When questioned about the Eels’ commitment to the current season amidst speculation of focusing on the next, Ryles firmly denied any such claims, asserting that the team is dedicated to improving and competing in every training session and match.

Ryles described the decision to drop Brown as “pretty clear” and mentioned he had communicated his plans to Brown as early as the previous month, allowing for a smooth transition to Newcastle before the June 30 deadline. Although Ryles is not considering relegating Brown to reserve grade, he has not ruled out his return to the first-grade team.

He stated, “The option to use him again is certainly there,” indicating that if injuries occurred, Brown could still play a role in the squad.

The Eels are facing a difficult period ahead, as they not only confront the Raiders but also have upcoming matches against the Broncos and Storm, as well as a showdown with the Warriors in round 26. The team is determined to avoid finishing at the bottom of the standings.
