Australia has experienced its coldest temperature of the year, with Thredbo Top Station in New South Wales recording a stark -13 degrees Celsius overnight, marking the country’s chilliest night of 2025, according to Weatherzone. This unusually frigid weather was attributed to a rare windless winter night at the elevation of 1957m. This temperature is the lowest observed in New South Wales since 2018 and the coldest across Australia since a similar reading was noted in Tasmania’s Liawenee in July 2024.

In Sydney, temperatures dipped just below seven degrees, while residents brace for another week of rainfall following a recent record-breaking downpour. The city is expected to endure persistent showers up until at least Sunday, with forecasts warning of potential heavy rainfall and flooding affecting much of the east coast.

Speaking of Sydney’s recent weather, the city witnessed its rainiest August weekend since 1998, with over 80mm of rain recorded in just two days, surpassing the typical monthly expectation. Meanwhile, Western Australia is also anticipating significant rainfall, with predictions of up to 80mm in the south-western regions and around 40mm forecasted for Perth over the next Tuesday and Wednesday.

This extreme winter weather and continued rain highlight the chaotic seasonal variations Australia is currently facing, turning the nation’s weather patterns upside down and prompting concerns amongst residents for potential flooding and further adverse weather conditions.
