Coalition Rift Nears Resolution as Liberal Party Backs Nationals’ Policy Requests

The Coalition’s temporary split appears to be resolving quickly, as the Liberal Party has acquiesced to four key policy demands put forth by the Nationals, which could reinstate their long-established political partnership.

Just three days after Nationals leader David Littleproud declared that the Coalition agreement would not be renewed, a meeting among Liberal MPs and senators resulted in a consensus to back the contentious issues of nuclear energy, a substantial regional investment, improved regional phone coverage, and powers for supermarket divestiture.

The Liberals have adopted a softer stance on nuclear energy compared to their election platform, now only focusing on lifting the federal ban on atomic energy rather than the ambitious plan to build seven nuclear power plants across the nation.

Ongoing discussions between Opposition Leader Sussan Ley and Littleproud suggest that with concessions from both sides, a formal agreement for the Coalition may be reached in the near future. This would likely lead to the unveiling of a shadow cabinet that includes both Liberal and National MPs ahead of parliament reconvening.
