Sharks head coach Craig Fitzgibbon has highlighted a significant shift in his team’s mentality, particularly noting a resilient attitude following recent critiques. This week, reports from Nine’s Danny Weidler on 100% Footy revealed that player Nicho Hynes confronted journalists who questioned the team’s capabilities, while fellow teammate Ronaldo Mulitalo also expressed defiance towards sceptics, stating, “We’re backing ourselves. Nobody is giving us a chance.”

Mulitalo, speaking on Triple M about a personal rivalry with Storm winger Will Warbrick, referred to himself as the “Ron Dog”, implying that despite lacking physical attributes, his heart and spirit make him formidable. In a recent match against the Roosters, Hynes displayed his confidence by scoring a try and addressing the camera with a ‘shhh’, further emphasising his determination.

Ahead of the grand final qualifier against Melbourne, Fitzgibbon clarified that the team’s motivation stems from their internal drive rather than outside opinions. He stated, “It’s confidence more than anything,” and highlighted that the team is focused on the effort they have invested, rather than on external commentary. He praised the players for sticking up for themselves and having belief in their abilities, noting that it reflects positively on the team dynamics and club spirit.

Fitzgibbon also mentioned how some players have been affected by the scrutiny, but he views this as a positive influence. He’s keen on nurturing this competitive spirit while ensuring that the players maintain focus on their performance. Regarding Mulitalo, Fitzgibbon acknowledged that post-match discussions had addressed the need for better energy management, indicating that while he encourages Mulitalo’s competitiveness, there should be a balance in expression during games.

With Mulitalo under the spotlight after previous encounters with Storm fullback Ryan Papenhuyzen, Fitzgibbon expressed confidence in his player’s ability to channel that competitive nature wisely for the benefit of the team. Fans eagerly anticipate how these dynamics will play out in the impending match against Melbourne.
