Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Richard Marles has expressed concerns regarding China’s recent actions, as its warships reportedly fired into airspace near the Australian coast. Although there has been no confirmation of actual firing, commercial pilots received a last-minute alert about a live firing event. Marles underscored the importance of the situation but clarified that China hasn’t violated international law.

The quick notification prompted diversions for airborne planes, raising safety concerns. Marles indicated that Australia sought clarification from the Chinese government, as the short notice was unsettling, especially given that the Royal Australian Navy typically provides 12 to 24 hours’ advance warning for live-fire exercises in international waters.

While China has yet to offer a satisfactory explanation, Marles noted that Australian forces are closely monitoring the Chinese task group, highlighting an unprecedented level of surveillance to understand their activities. He confirmed that while China is not breaching international law, Australia is exercising its rights to monitor the situation. In summary, Marles appreciates the need for better communication, emphasizing the importance of safety and international protocols amidst these developments.
