A violent child rapist has been released in Adelaide after serving a five-year sentence for the sexual abuse of a young girl, even as he faces sentencing for another rape tomorrow. Due to legal restrictions, the offender’s name remains undisclosed, but his release has sparked concern from one of his victims, who believes he poses a danger to children and is likely to flee.
The man was spotted today at the Adelaide Airport, monitored closely by police as he prepared to board a flight. A spokesperson for South Australia Police assured the public that they are collaborating with agencies across state lines to ensure community safety.
Mike Worsman, a victim of the offender’s violent actions in the 1990s, expressed his fear for his own safety and that of his family, as well as the broader community, following the offender’s release. The offender is due to appear in a Canberra court tomorrow for Worsman’s abuse.
In light of these concerns, South Australian Premier Peter Malinauskas disclosed plans to actively track the released individual, aiming to reassure the public that measures are in place for their protection.
Despite these assurances, Worsman expressed frustration about the lack of communication regarding the offender’s movements. He raised concerns about his own safety, stating, “We are the people that can be harmed,” and emphasised the importance of being kept informed to protect both himself and his family. Worsman revealed that he believed the offender was imprisoned at Mount Gambier but was shocked to find he had been released from a facility closer to his community.
The rapist was accompanied by police as he boarded his flight at Adelaide Airport and indicated he intended to attend his sentencing. If he fails to show, a warrant for his arrest is expected to be issued.
