Severe weather, including heavy rainfall and strong winds, has led to significant coastal erosion at Wamberal Beach, prompting the local council to place sandbags along the shoreline in an urgent effort to protect nearby homes. The NSW State Emergency Service (SES) has ordered the evacuation of five properties along Ocean View Drive due to the escalating risks posed by the weather.
Residents with homes adjacent to Wamberal Beach are being urged to remain alert and evacuate if needed, while additional evacuations have been directed for several houses on Hutton Road in The Entrance North, as dangerous surf conditions worsen the risk of coastal erosion. SES volunteers have been actively advising residents to leave the area, emphasising the dangers in their evacuation notices issued earlier.
In April, a similar coastal swell caused landslips in the Central Coast region, and the SES has warned that similar incidents could occur again as conditions remain treacherous. Meanwhile, train services to and from Wyong have been suspended due to the storm’s impact, which is affecting areas from Coffs Harbour in the mid-north to Bega in the south.
Sydney is also experiencing the adverse effects of the storm, characterised by significant rainfall and powerful winds that have resulted in the cancellation of multiple ferry services. NSW Minister for Emergency Services, Jihad Dib, has stated that while the current situation is alarming, the region could face even harsher weather in the coming days.
