Vulnerable Australians will have access to a new free flu vaccine this year, following its inclusion in the National Immunisation Program (NIP). The cell-based vaccine, Flucelvax Quad, is cultivated in mammal cells instead of chicken eggs, specifically designed to align with the anticipated flu strains this season. Although it gained approval in 2021, this marks its inaugural year of free availability to eligible groups.

The vaccine targets Australians aged 5 to 64 deemed most at risk, including pregnant women, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, and individuals with pre-existing health conditions such as heart disease, respiratory issues, and diabetes. Infectious diseases expert, Professor Robert Booy, welcomed the addition, highlighting the ongoing risk of influenza for these groups.

Professor Booy emphasised the importance of offering this vaccine, noting it provides GPs and pharmacists with a vital option for protecting vulnerable populations as flu season approaches. While research shows that 50% of Australians understand the seriousness of flu, only about 25% of those aged 5 to 64 were vaccinated in 2023. With such low vaccination rates, many at-risk individuals may remain unprotected. Flucelvax Quad, developed by CSL Seqirus, is Australia’s sole cell-based influenza vaccine, enhancing the options for safeguarding public health this flu season.
