R&B artist Cassie Ventura found herself on the stand during Sean “Diddy” Combs’ sex trafficking trial, which is unfolding in Manhattan. On day four of the proceedings, she was compelled to recite explicit text exchanges with Combs, revealing her previous interest in encounters he had facilitated, despite claiming in her testimony that such experiences repulsed her.
The trial, which is projected to span around two months, sees Combs facing allegations from federal prosecutors that he misused his powerful position in the music industry to exploit Cassie and other women. They describe incidents involving coercive “freak-offs,” where Combs allegedly insisted on filming Cassie with sex workers.
Combs, however, has categorically denied all allegations, presenting a defence that attempts to characterise Cassie as a consenting participant in his lifestyle, arguing that while he may have exhibited violent behaviour, it did not constitute a criminal enterprise. During cross-examination, Cassie was asked about messages exchanged in 2009 where she expressed her eagerness to engage in these activities, contrasting sharply with her claims of emotional and physical distress associated with them.
Cassie detailed her experiences during this tumultuous relationship, which lasted from 2007 to 2018, including the significant psychological toll it took on her. She depicted the “freak-offs” as drug-fuelled events that lasted for hours or even days, leading her to develop an opioid addiction to cope with the resulting shame and trauma.
The courtroom atmosphere was tense, with Cassie’s supporters in attendance, while Combs remained composed as his lawyer, Anna Estevao, recited messages that demonstrated a different side to their interactions at the beginning of their relationship, which Cassie described as filled with love and excitement.
The defence sought to redirect the narrative, insinuating that the sexual engagements were part of a consensual “swingers lifestyle.” Cassie contradicted this notion, clarifying that while there were sexual elements involved, the nature of the “freak-offs” was distinctly different from swinging.
Cassie’s legal action against Combs in 2023 alleged a long history of physical and sexual abuse, resulting in a $20 million settlement shortly thereafter, which she disclosed in court. This case has prompted additional claims from other women. As the trial progresses, the implications for Combs, who could face significant prison time, loom large as he maintains his innocence amid a wave of allegations threatening his career and reputation.
