Carlton forward Elijah Hollands has taken an indefinite personal leave just before the start of the AFL season, prompting the club to commend his bravery in seeking assistance. The announcement came just two days prior to the season opener against Richmond. In a statement, Carlton’s football manager, Brad Lloyd, expressed admiration for Hollands, emphasising the importance of his well-being over football commitments.
Lloyd reassured that the club would support Hollands during this period, prioritising his mental health. He confirmed that while the football program details regarding Hollands’ involvement will be determined later, the focus must remain on the young player’s personal welfare. The club reiterated its commitment to providing ongoing support as Hollands takes this time for self-reflection and recovery.
Previously, in October 2023, Hollands pled guilty to possessing cocaine, which resulted in a two-match suspension from the AFL. Although the incident took place while he was still with the Gold Coast Suns, it did not lead to a criminal conviction. Drafted by the Suns at pick seven in the 2020 draft, Hollands has played 14 games for them before moving to Carlton, where he has since appeared in 22 matches.
The club’s response highlights a growing recognition within professional sports regarding the significance of mental health and the necessity for players to prioritise their personal well-being.
