The Vatican has unveiled the first images of Pope Francis, who passed away at the age of 88 after suffering a stroke. Displayed in a wooden casket adorned in red vestments, the photos show the Vatican secretary of state praying over him in the chapel of the Domus Santa Marta hotel, where the late Pope had resided. His death, announced on Monday, prompted a gathering of Cardinals to coordinate his funeral arrangements, burial, and the upcoming conclave to appoint his successor.

Pope Francis’ final public appearance took place on Easter Sunday, where he greeted worshippers from his popemobile, marking a poignant conclusion to his twelve-year papacy. Following his passing, discussions commenced regarding the timeline for moving his body to St Peter’s Basilica for public viewing, potentially as soon as Wednesday. Francis has expressed a desire to be buried at St Mary Major basilica, a location of significant personal importance where he frequently prayed and sought solace.

His simplified coffin design reflects the changes he implemented within the Church, moving away from traditional lavishness. Future plans include a funeral managed by the dean of the College of Cardinals, with notable figures like US President Donald Trump and Argentine President Javier Milei expected to attend.

World leaders and ordinary citizens have expressed profound respect for Francis, highlighting his moral leadership and compassion. As the Church enters a period of mourning, cardinals will gather in Rome to prepare for the significant task ahead – electing a new pope. This conclave must occur between 15 and 20 days after the “sede vacante” declaration, or vacant papacy, with ballots being cast in secret until a successor is chosen.

Francis made a lasting impact through his commitment to justice and peace, urging nations to embrace the vulnerable and be stewards of the Earth for future generations. The upcoming days are pivotal as the global Catholic community mourns a leader celebrated for his humility and dedication to the faith.
