In a thrilling clash at McDonald Jones Stadium, the Canberra Raiders secured a narrow victory over the Newcastle Knights, triumphing 22-18 and rising to the pinnacle of the NRL ladder for the first time in 22 years. This victory is particularly significant as it continues their impressive run of six consecutive wins and 11 victories in their last 12 matches.

Unfortunately for Newcastle, the night took a turn for the worse when star fullback Kalyn Ponga exited the field due to a foot injury and did not return. Despite reports indicating it was not the same foot that caused his prior Lisfranc injury, concerns remain as he was seen post-match in a moon boot. Scans are anticipated to assess the injury further.

The Raiders, underlining their attacking prowess, dominated the first half, which saw the Knights fail to score. Canberra’s offensive strategy exploited second-phase play effectively, with Kaeo Weekes emerging as a standout, contributing a try along with impressive run metre statistics.

Simi Sasagi opened the scoring for Canberra, capitalising on a chip kick from Ethan Strange, leading to a 15th-minute try. The team continued to display excellent ball movement, with Weekes facilitating their second try as Strange crossed the line soon after. With the Raiders leading 16-0 at half-time, Newcastle legend Andrew Johns called for urgent changes to their attack, citing a lack of pressure on Canberra’s defence.

The Knights finally broke their duck in the second half with James Schiller scoring two tries, one with vital assistance from Ponga’s pass. Despite Newcastle rallying late in the game and coming within four points of the Raiders, their overall performance was marred by inconsistency, exemplified by crucial errors that handed scoring opportunities to Canberra.

The Raiders’ triumph not only earned them the top position in the competition, drawing level on points with the Bulldogs but also setting the stage for a promising finish to the season, with six of their last eight matches against lower-ranked teams. As they look ahead, hopes are high for Canberra to secure the minor premiership.
