Cameron Smith was the centre of an entertaining mishap on Thursday night when he accidentally dropped an NRL premiership ring during a live broadcast. The former Melbourne Storm hooker has won the prestigious ring three times and even has two more that were stripped due to salary cap violations, so it’s safe to say he has plenty of these coveted items at home.
Despite this, Smith was eager to take a close look at the ring intended for the upcoming grand final winners, held on Sunday night. However, while tilting the display box to showcase the ring during Nine’s Grand Final Countdown, it slipped from his grasp and dropped onto the studio desk. Thankfully, he managed to catch it before it hit the ground, averting a potential disaster.
Show host James Bracey seized the moment, jokingly commenting, “They are a treasured item, and the players are fighting for it on Sunday. You just wanna hope… whoever ends up with that one on Sunday night, I hope it’s not missing a diamond or two.” The audience erupted in laughter at the slip-up, while Smith appeared visibly embarrassed, apologising to the players who could potentially wear the prized ring, stating, “It’s gonna be Jahrome Hughes or Adam Reynolds, it’s got a No.7 on the side of it. Boys, I’m sorry.”
This incident added an amusing twist to the lead-up to the grand final, where Melbourne and Brisbane will face off alongside other significant matches, including the State Championship Final and the NRLW decider at Accor Stadium. Smith’s humorous moment reflects the lighthearted spirit that often surrounds the sport, even amid the serious competition for the premiership title.
