Queensland captain Cameron Munster expressed his emotions following the Maroons’ thrilling 26-24 victory over New South Wales in Game Two of the State of Origin series. This match marked Munster’s debut as captain, a role he took on after coach Billy Slater controversially dropped Daly Cherry-Evans. Munster not only led his team to victory but also earned the Man of the Match title for his outstanding performance, contributing a crucial try, 131 run metres, and 21 tackles.

In a post-match interview, Munster acknowledged the pressure surrounding Slater due to his difficult run leading up to the game. He stated, “With all the pressure and criticism that Billy Slater has been getting, we’re just glad we played for him tonight. He deserves everything — he loves Queensland and he loves this group.” Munster’s candid remarks included an expletive, reflecting the intensity of the moment.

The lead-up to the match was rife with tension after Slater found himself embroiled in a public dispute with player Aaron Woods and had to apologise to Paul Green’s family for a previous comment about Green, who tragically passed away three years ago. Munster passionately defended Slater, emphasising his commitment to the team and the unyielding support they wanted to show their coach amidst the media scrutiny.

He explained how the team was motivated to respond to jibes about Slater, stating, “When you have someone jabbing at him like that, it really hurts me personally…he’s our coach and he’s done everything he can.” Munster’s heartfelt comments struck a chord with Slater, who remarked that it was the nicest thing Munster had ever said to him.

Former Queensland greats, including Darren Lockyer and Cameron Smith, also praised Munster’s leadership and performance, noting that he stepped up when it mattered the most. Lockyer highlighted how Munster’s involvement in the game added unpredictability to the Maroons’ attack, while Smith remarked on his composure and control throughout the match.

With Game Three approaching on July 9 at Accor Stadium in Sydney, Queensland aims to reclaim the Origin shield. Munster’s leadership and pivotal role in this contest have set the stage for an exciting climax to the series.
