Cameron McInnes, the captain of the Cronulla Sharks, is seeking clarification from the NRL after his team was denied a critical captain’s challenge during their match against the Penrith Panthers. The game, which saw the Sharks down 24-16 with just 16 minutes remaining, took a pivotal turn when McInnes was tackled by Panthers players Matt Eisenhuth and Moses Leota. As McInnes hit the ground, the referee repeatedly called for a surrender, leading to the ball becoming dislodged.

Referee Ashley Klein ruled the play a knock-on, but McInnes attempted to challenge the decision, prompting Klein to state that a challenge could not be made. This ruling puzzled commentators, including Andrew Johns, who questioned the consistency of the challenge regulations.

In the post-match press conference, McInnes expressed his confusion over the ruling, particularly regarding the surrender call’s implications. He stated, “I’d like some clarity on that because the dialogue to me was with that surrender call… I thought you could challenge any play, so I’d like some feedback on that.”

Head coach Craig Fitzgibbon supported McInnes’ concerns, remarking that he believed officials had made an error regarding the challenge rules. “I just thought, as a rule, that if he rules that, that’s a stop in play that you are allowed to challenge,” he commented, acknowledging the significant impact the decision had on the game.

The Sharks are now left to seek clarification from the NRL to better understand the intricacies of the captain’s challenge rule, especially in relation to specific call circumstances.
