The chair of Victoria’s Independent Office for School Dispute Resolution, Frank Handy, has proposed a $1,000 fine for parents who defame teachers online, citing a worrying trend of escalating abusive behaviour towards school staff. Recent research from the Australian Catholic University reveals that instances of gossip and slander have surged to 65%, with cyberbullying rising nearly 88% according to the 2024 Australian Principals’ Occupational Health, Safety and Wellbeing survey.

Addressing these issues, Shadow Education Minister Jess Wilson stated that the coalition aims to tackle parent and classroom behaviour in schools in the near future. She emphasized that this harassment affects teachers statewide, particularly new graduates entering the profession, contributing to teacher attrition.

In contrast, Parents Victoria’s chief executive, Gail McHardy, acknowledged the seriousness of online harassment but contended that imposing fines won’t resolve the underlying issues. She argued that while such penalties may act as a deterrent, they are not a comprehensive solution.

Education Minister Ben Carroll responded to the proposal by highlighting that there are no plans to implement a fine system. He noted current initiatives like the Positive Behaviours Framework and a Community Safety Order system that can prohibit parents from attending specific schools when necessary, though these notices are rarely issued.

As the conversation continues on how to best support teachers and address misconduct, stakeholders remain open to exploring diverse solutions to promote a safer school environment.
