Update February 12, 2025:

Dani Stevens, a woman living with severe epilepsy, has successfully secured funding for a new assistance dog, Nina, after an initial rejection from the NDIS (National Disability Insurance Scheme). For seven years, Dani’s trusty seizure alert dog, Baloo, had provided invaluable support by alerting her to impending seizures, allowing her to lay down in safety. While the NDIS had recognised Baloo’s pivotal role in Dani’s care, they initially declined to cover the costs for Nina after Baloo’s retirement.

Fortunately, following advocacy from the community and support from local officials, the NDIS reversed its decision, announcing funding approval for Nina. Dani expressed her gratitude, attributing the victory to the collective effort of her supporters and the media’s intervention.

Living with uncontrolled seizures has made Dani reliant on these assistance dogs, as they can sense changes in her body, ensuring she can take precautions before a seizure occurs. The family had hoped the funding application process would be straightforward, especially given that Nina’s costs are significantly lower than hiring carers. Instead, they encountered bureaucratic challenges that highlighted the struggle many face in accessing necessary support.

Dani’s story exemplifies the critical bond between assistance animals and their owners, showcasing the ongoing battle for proper funding and care in Australia.
