The ACT Brumbies revitalised their season with a narrow 14-10 victory against the Highlanders in Dunedin on Friday night. Despite expectations for a high-scoring match in the sheltered conditions of New Zealand’s southern region, this encounter turned into a gritty battle, highlighted by a decisive try from Luke Reimer late in the game.
Reimer, who was brought on unexpectedly to replace Charlie Cale in the first half, made a significant impact by scoring the winning try in the 75th minute. The pivotal moment came when Highlanders hooker Henry Bell was yellow-carded, allowing the Brumbies to capitalise on a moment of disadvantage for their opponents.
Brumbies’ captain Ryan Lonergan also contributed, scoring a try in what marked his 100th game, while his brother Lachlan made his season debut for the Super Rugby side. This win propelled the Brumbies to third place on the standings, trailing only the Hurricanes and Blues, who were set to compete against each other in Wellington the following day.
Post-match, Reimer reflected on the team’s struggles against Australian sides, acknowledging a period of complacency and emphasising their ambition to dominate the competition. The Brumbies’ victory not only solidified their position in the league but also extended their winning streak over the Highlanders to six matches.
