In a thrilling clash in Dunedin on Friday night, the ACT Brumbies revitalised their season with a dramatic 14-10 comeback victory over the Highlanders. Traditionally, matches held indoors in this southern region of New Zealand are known for their high-scoring nature, but this encounter proved to be a tense, low-scoring battle, culminating in a decisive moment from Luke Reimer.
Reimer, the underrated flanker, made a significant impact as he was called into action earlier than anticipated, stepping in for Charlie Cale in the first half. His perseverance paid off when he scored the match-winning try in the 75th minute, shortly after a yellow card was issued to Highlanders’ replacement hooker, Henry Bell, allowing the Brumbies to gain a crucial advantage.
The Brumbies’ captain, Ryan Lonergan, celebrated his 100th game with a try of his own, while his brother Lachlan marked his return to the Super Rugby season. This victory propelled the Brumbies to third place on the ladder, trailing behind the Hurricanes and Blues, the latter of whom are set to compete in Wellington on Saturday.
Following the match, Reimer acknowledged the team’s recent struggles, particularly against Australian sides, and emphasised the need for improvement to achieve their ultimate goal of winning the competition. He noted that complacency may have crept in but reaffirmed their commitment to securing consecutive victories.
With this win, the Brumbies maintained an impressive streak, marking their sixth consecutive triumph over the Highlanders.
