In Taree, brothers Daniel and Michael confront the aftermath of devastating floods that have impacted their family home filled with debris from mattresses, toys, and carpets. Daniel recounted the harrowing moment the floodwaters surged into their home early one morning, forcing them to evacuate quickly.

The tragedy is compounded by the emotional toll it has taken on their family, especially on Daniel’s six-year-old daughter, who has lost all her cherished toys and belongings. “This used to be the family home; we’ve owned it for over 30 years,” reflects Daniel, emphasising the deep-rooted connection to the house that has now been affected not for the first time—flooded previously in 2021.

Since that incident, insurance premiums have skyrocketed, leaving the family unable to afford coverage. “We don’t have insurance. They put the insurance up way too high—about $15,000 a year. We just can’t afford that,” he lamented.

As the brothers strive to cope with their disastrous circumstances, they’re also dealing with the heartbreaking loss of their mother to cancer just a month prior. Daniel expressed the overwhelming nature of their grief: “It’s really hard for my brothers and my kids, but we’re trying to get through it.”

Before her passing, their mother had constructed a tiny home on the property to support Michael, who has various disabilities. “I want to try to learn to live on my own,” he shared, reflecting his aspirations amidst the chaos.

Currently, the family’s backyard resembles a mud pit, and their house lies in disarray, with hopes of recovery resting on their community’s support as they begin the arduous process of healing and rebuilding. As they navigate this challenging chapter, they remain hopeful for brighter days ahead.

For those wishing to assist the family in their recovery, donations can be made through their GoFundMe page.
