Brisbane Broncos player Ezra Mam has publicly addressed the media for the first time following his conviction for drug driving, which has resulted in a nine-game suspension from the NRL and a significant fine imposed by the club. At a media event at Red Hill, the 22-year-old was questioned about the incident, including his cocaine use, but chose not to comment in detail, stating, “I’m probably not gonna touch on that at this point in time.”
Mam expressed a desire to move forward, acknowledging the consequences of his actions and his role as a role model for young fans. He admitted, “I was in the wrong,” and conveyed his regret while emphasising his commitment to demonstrate change through his actions both on and off the field. He revealed that he has undergone rehabilitation since the incident and is working on improving his life outside of rugby.
He has reached out to the victims from the crash, including a young girl who suffered injuries, and noted that he was unable to do so prior to his court case due to legal restrictions. Mam indicated that he wished to express his apologies and hopes to meet with them, while also respecting their boundaries.
Despite speculation regarding his future with the Broncos, including talks of potentially having his contract terminated, Mam expressed gratitude for the club’s support and the opportunity to continue his career. He detailed his early interactions with new coach Michael Maguire, who has been supportive during this challenging time, encouraging him to face his problems directly.
Once his suspension ends, Mam is set to return to the field for Brisbane’s match against the Rabbitohs in round 10, eager to regain his place in the team and prove his commitment to the sport. Mam’s experience serves as a reminder of the importance of accountability and personal growth in the public eye.
