A tragic incident in Wellington, New Zealand, has resulted in the deaths of a UK couple, Ben and Claire Anderson, believed to be a murder-suicide case. Ben, a scientist, and Claire, a teacher, were found deceased at their home in Roseneath after police conducted a welfare check following concerns raised by a family member who hadn’t heard from them.
Upon arrival, officers discovered both individuals lifeless, and the deaths have since been referred to the coroner. Two post-mortem exams were conducted, and authorities have confirmed that they are not seeking anyone else in connection with the incident.
Emma Prestidge, a neighbour, expressed her shock, describing the Andersons as “lovely, kind people.” She noted how Ben had been living with the property owner for some time while establishing a life in New Zealand, frequently returning from the UK since 2020. The couple had adult children residing in New Zealand, and while Claire had recently moved permanently, their belongings were still in transit.
Ben was known for his work in the field of science, currently employed as a research scientist at the Building Research Association of New Zealand. Previously, he also held a research fellowship at the University of Otago’s Centre for Sustainability. Claire had dedicated her career to teaching.
The Prestidges met the Andersons while moving items along their shared pathway, noting the positive impact the couple had on their community. There were no signs of distress from the Andersons until the police notifications late on Monday evening, leaving neighbours in disbelief as they processed the heartbreaking news.
This incident has not only shocked their immediate community but has also raised questions about mental health awareness and support systems for expatriates in New Zealand. As investigations continue, the focus is on understanding the circumstances that led to this tragic outcome.
