Brisbane’s Rail System Disrupted as Union Alleges Workers Are ‘Locked Out’

Commuters in Brisbane are facing significant challenges today due to rising petrol prices and a rail strike that has led to transport disruptions across the city. Queensland Rail has indicated that major delays are particularly affecting the Ipswich and Cleveland train lines. Although replacement buses are being deployed on these routes, they are expected to reach full capacity quickly.

Queensland Rail urged customers to allow extra travel time and explore alternative transport options. The rail service’s CEO, Kat Stapleton, expressed deep apologies to passengers, especially with the added strain of the fuel crisis. She noted that approximately 1,300 daily services are disrupted due to the industrial action. Queensland Rail had attempted to resolve the issue with the Fair Work Commission but was unsuccessful in preventing the strike. Ongoing negotiations with the unions have been in place since January, yet the situation has reached a critical point.

The disruptions stem partly from over 30 protected industrial action notices received by Queensland Rail, which Stapleton highlighted as a major complicating factor. Unfortunately, without the unions agreeing to halt their actions and return to negotiations, the issues are likely to persist.

In contrast, the Rail, Tram, and Bus Union (RTBU) claimed the government is primarily responsible for the disruption, alleging that they have been “locked out” of work despite being prepared to continue operations. The RTBU argued that minor industrial actions had prompted the government’s drastic response, which they assert has led to widespread commuter issues. They maintained that any further disruptions are a direct choice made by the Queensland government.

As the situation develops, Queensland Rail remains open to discussions but faces significant pressures from both the unions and commuting public.
