Brisbane Lions’ football operations manager, Danny Daly, has expressed his gratitude and surprise at being considered for the head coaching position at the Melbourne Demons, following the departure of Simon Goodwin. With the backing of Lions head coach Chris Fagan, there are suggestions that Daly could be a frontrunner for the role should Fagan retire at the end of his contract in 2027.

Daly, who has been a vital part of the Lions’ coaching staff for over a decade, assumes his current role in football leadership since 2020. Speaking on 3AW’s Wide World of Sports, he revealed that he has contemplated pursuing a senior coaching role more seriously in recent years. While he remains content in his current position, he acknowledged the allure of coaching at a senior level, describing it as "humbling" to have his name in circulation.

Fagan, who has a close relationship with Daly, expressed support for his assistant’s aspirations, emphasising the significant contribution Daly has made to the Lions since joining the club. He stated that if Daly were to pursue an opportunity with the Demons, he would wholeheartedly support his decision and wish him well.

In addition to the Demons role, Daly has reportedly attracted interest from Carlton regarding their general manager of football vacancy. However, he maintains a level of satisfaction in his current role and is grateful to be part of the AFL.

Daly is inspired by Fagan’s trajectory within the league, particularly Fagan’s success in leading the Lions to grand finals, an achievement that resonates with those aspiring to coaching roles without prior playing experience at the top level. Daly recognises that others can follow a similar path, drawing hope from Fagan’s accomplishments in reshaping the team into competitive contenders.

In summary, while Danny Daly entertains the idea of stepping into a head coaching role in the AFL, he remains anchored in his current position with the Lions, appreciative of the accolades and support he’s received from peers and mentors alike.
