Brisbane’s ferries have been relocated to safety as Cyclone Alfred approaches the south-east Queensland coast, expected to make landfall as a category 2 storm. The cyclone poses severe risks, prompting warnings for over four million residents across Queensland and northern New South Wales. Authorities anticipate daily rainfall between 200 to 400 millimetres, strong wind gusts reaching up to 120 km/h, and potentially life-threatening flash flooding.

Meteorological predictions suggest Alfred will maintain its status as a category 1 storm through the night before intensifying to a category 2 as it moves westwards toward the coast. Residents in vulnerable low-lying areas, particularly those living on the Moreton Bay islands, have been urged to prepare for the impending threat.

As part of safety measures, all ferries on the Brisbane River had been removed from service by midnight, with others connecting the islands scheduled to follow. The final passenger ferry from Dunwich to Cleveland is set to operate at 10.45 am today, followed by an early conclusion for vehicle ferries. Long wait times at sandbag stations have compounded the situation, with reports of some stations running out by midday.

Cyclone Alfred, which has been observed roughly 550 kilometres east of Brisbane, boasts sustained winds of 85 km/h and gusts reaching 120 km/h. The watch zone stretches for over 500 kilometres along the coastline from Sandy Cape to Grafton, NSW. Residents are cautioned that the cyclone could produce high tides, hazardous surf, and dangerous swells.

Premier David Crisafulli has emphasised the urgency for residents to consider evacuation, stating that the window for safe departure is closing. He urged Queenslanders to stay informed and be prepared for changes as the cyclone rapidly approaches. The Bureau of Meteorology has acknowledged uncertainties in the cyclone’s exact path, which could vary significantly in terms of where it makes landfall.

Crisafulli highlighted the necessity for prompt decisions regarding safety, reminding the community that proactive measures can save lives. As Cyclone Alfred continues to travel towards the coast, residents are being advised to remain vigilant and heed all warnings and updates.
