A community group advocating for the protection of Victoria Park is gearing up for legal action against plans for a new stadium in Brisbane, linked to the upcoming 2032 Olympics. This stance comes amid scrutiny over Premier David Crisafulli’s commitment to honour his pre-election promise that no stadium would be constructed on the park site.

The Save Victoria Park group has engaged barristers Stephen Keim SC and Dr Chris McGrath to support their legal efforts. They assert their readiness to pursue all available avenues to hinder the proposed stadium plans if the Premier defaults on his pledge. The group emphasises its resolve in safeguarding the park and has communicated their intentions clearly to Crisafulli.

During a recent question session, Opposition Leader Steven Miles pressed Crisafulli about his commitment to the promise made during his election campaign, highlighting community concerns. In response, Crisafulli maintained that Queenslanders would be presented with a well-defined plan for the future by March 25, asserting his government’s vision for the state.

Additionally, there are discussions underway regarding relocating the Brisbane Live Arena from Roma Street to a position adjacent to the Gabba, optimising accessibility offered by the Cross River Rail project. Another proposal on the table involves shifting the swimming events from the arena to an alternative venue, though these ideas remain unconfirmed.

Federal Sports Minister Annika Wells mentioned that she has yet to receive updates regarding the state government’s strategic plans. Despite apprehensions regarding timing, she remains optimistic about Brisbane’s capability to host a successful Olympics, noting that there is ample time remaining compared to what Sydney had prior to its hosting in 2000.

This community-led initiative highlights the tension between public sentiment and government promises, indicating a potentially drawn-out legal and political battle over the future of Victoria Park as Brisbane gears up for its significant role in the Olympic festivities.
