Brisbane Broncos player Ezra Mam has publicly addressed his recent drug driving charges for the first time since being found guilty, opting to avoid detailed discussions about the incident. The 22-year-old received a nine-game suspension from the NRL and faced significant fines from the club as a result of the off-field issues.
During a media conference at Red Hill, Mam was asked about the crash and his cocaine use but chose not to delve into specifics. He remarked, “I’m probably not gonna touch on that at this point in time,” emphasising his focus on moving forward. He acknowledged the impact of his actions, particularly on young fans, and expressed remorse for his mistakes, stating, “I was in the wrong, but right now I am looking forward to getting back on the right path.”
Mam has taken steps to improve his life following the incident, including spending time in rehabilitation. He mentioned that he has made substantial progress behind the scenes and has attempted to reach out to the victims of the crash, including a young girl who was hurt. After the conclusion of his court case, Mam sought to connect with them, expressing his desire to apologise in person, while being mindful of their space and comfort.
Reflecting on the support he received from the Broncos, (including new coach Michael Maguire), Mam recognised the precariousness of his situation and admitted he felt worried about his future with the club. He expressed gratitude for the second chance he’s been given, stating his intent to repay the Broncos through his actions moving forward.
Although Mam will not return to the field until the tenth round of the season, he is eager to get back to playing against the Rabbitohs. His experience serves as both a cautionary tale and an opportunity for personal growth as he aims to regain respect in his professional life and within the community.
