The Brisbane Broncos’ celebration following their victory over the Roosters was cut short due to the impending arrival of Cyclone Alfred. The club swiftly arranged a flight back to Toowoomba, followed by a bus ride to Brisbane, to provide support to family and friends in the affected areas.
Upon their departure from Allianz Stadium, the Broncos received a police escort to the airport, as reported by James Bracey during Nine’s sports coverage. Star fullback Reece Walsh took a moment to connect with fans after the match, expressing concern for those impacted by the cyclone, stretching from Queensland to Byron Bay. He urged the community to support each other during this challenging time, stating, “Keep looking after each other… I’m sure we’ll get through it.”
In a press conference, Broncos captain Adam Reynolds described the situation as uncertain. He noted the rarity of cyclones impacting the state and emphasised the importance of returning home quickly to be with loved ones. Reynolds reiterated the need to care for one another and stay informed about the cyclone’s effects.
Additionally, the Dolphins adjusted their plans for an upcoming match against the Rabbitohs, relocating the game to Sydney due to the cyclone threats. Three players, Kodi Nikorima, Mark Nicholls, and Kenny Bromwich, chose to withdraw from the match to remain with their families. Nikorima’s wife publicly condemned the decision to move the game, labelling it as “disgusting.”
Overall, both the Broncos and Dolphins are prioritising safety and community during this time of uncertainty, highlighting the resilience of teams and their commitment to their fans.
