A man from Brisbane faces serious allegations of making a bomb threat during a flight, with the added complication of travelling under an assumed identity. The incident reportedly took place on January 14, as the 44-year-old male boarded a flight heading to Brisbane at Sydney Airport. Witnesses claim he was seen using his mobile phone shortly before take-off, during which he mentioned a bomb.
Following the remark, Australian Federal Police swiftly intervened, escorting the individual off the plane and subsequently discovering that he was not using his real name. A thorough examination of the aircraft confirmed that no bomb was present.
The man has been charged with making a threatening statement on an aircraft, as well as with the offense of travelling under false identification. He is scheduled to appear in the Downing Centre Local Court in Sydney today. If convicted, he could face a maximum penalty of one year in prison and a fine of $16,500.
Detective Superintendent Morgen Blunden from the Australian Federal Police (AFP) has made it clear that the authorities will not tolerate any threats to aviation security, whether overtly declared or casually mentioned. He emphasised that air travel should remain a safe experience for all passengers and crew members. The AFP is committed to collaborating closely with airlines to address any behaviours that could compromise aviation security.
