A fisherman from South Australia recently filmed drone footage revealing a great white shark prowling alarmingly close to a popular beach. Brett Mensforth, an experienced angler, expressed his astonishment at the shark’s proximity to the shore, noting it was the first time he had encountered one so near.
In a reflection of changing marine conditions, Mensforth remarked that he had observed more sharks in the past year than in the previous decade. There has been a notable increase in shark sightings along various South Australian coastlines, including Sellicks Beach, Aldinga, Maslin Beach, Seaford, Aldinga Beach, and Normanville. Additionally, a deceased great white shark was discovered at Port Willunga, further highlighting this trend.
Local shark expert Andrew Fox attributed these unusual movements to possible environmental factors, citing record-high water temperatures that may correlate with a toxic algal bloom affecting the sharks’ behaviour. In response to the rising number of sightings, authorities are urging beach visitors to report any shark encounters to ensure safety along the shoreline.
