Tensions are escalating as the fourth Test between England and India approaches at Old Trafford. Indian captain Shubman Gill expressed discontent on Wednesday morning (AEST) regarding England’s actions during the previous third Test at Lord’s, claiming they contradicted the “spirit of the game” by delaying their appearance at the crease.

Gill’s frustration centered on England’s openers, Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett, who were tardy to take their positions on the third day of the Test, which England ultimately won by 22 runs, securing a 2-1 series lead. A significant moment occurred when, with just seven minutes of play remaining, India managed to bowl only one over due to the delay.

“Many people have had their say, so let me clarify things once and for all,” Gill stated. “The England batsmen had seven minutes left and were 90 seconds late to the crease—not just 10 or 20 seconds, but a full 90.” He reiterated that England’s conduct was far from adhering to the true spirit of cricket.

The Test saw various confrontations between players over the following days. With a chance to clinch the series with a win in the upcoming match, England captain Ben Stokes affirmed that while his team wouldn’t engage in provocation, they wouldn’t shy away from standing their ground. “We won’t intentionally instigate a conflict as it could divert our focus from the game at hand,” he remarked. “However, we won’t back down against any team trying to be confrontational with us; we will respond in kind. This applies to all teams, not just us.”

As the fourth Test looms, both teams are aware of the intensity that has begun to surround the rivalry, with each side preparing for an electrifying showdown.
