Brad Fittler has expressed significant concern following the Sydney Roosters’ heavy defeat to the Newcastle Knights in a recent trial match, signalling a rocky commencement to the club’s rebuilding phase. The Roosters have seen an exodus of talent over the off-season, including key players like Jared Waerea-Hargreaves, Joseph Manu, and Luke Keary, leaving coach Trent Robinson with a challenging task ahead.
In their inaugural game of the pre-season, the Roosters faced the Dragons and, despite fielding a depleted squad, put up a competitive fight. However, in stark contrast, their full-strength side succumbed to a devastating 48-10 loss against the Knights, raising alarm bells for supporters and analysts alike, particularly given the Knights’ own struggles in recent times.
During an interview with 2GB’s Wide World of Sports Radio, Fittler was unequivocal when asked if fans should be worried about the team. His blunt response was simply, "Yes." He highlighted that the Roosters were unable to defend effectively, conceding 50 points to a team that is grappling with its own issues. Fittler emphasized that the squad needed to perform better and appeared disjointed, despite having several star players on the field.
Looking ahead, the Roosters will aim to regroup before their first regular season match against the Brisbane Broncos, although they will be missing front-rower Spencer Leniu due to suspension. The upcoming period will be crucial for the team as they work to establish coherence and build momentum for the challenges that lie ahead.
