On Stradbroke Island today, the roads were eerily deserted as Mel Lalor drove through, only to encounter the aftermath of violent winds that had ravaged the area overnight. The island, situated within Moreton Bay, was braced for the impending landfall of Tropical Cyclone Alfred, a category 2 storm bringing wind gusts of up to 120 km/h. As the cyclone approaches, residents, who have spent the past three days preparing, can only wait for the storm to arrive, expected to strike the southeast Queensland and northern New South Wales tomorrow.

Lalor shared her unnerving experience of the howling winds, recalling the damage she witnessed on her morning drive—fallen trees and scattered debris. Despite the unsettling forecast of gusts up to 150 km/h, many locals have opted to stay put, reluctant to leave their homes even if they are among the first areas to feel the cyclone’s full force. Lalor, who owns a local real estate agency, noted the community’s resolve, though they are well aware that they may face the brunt of the storm.

In readiness, numerous residents have moved outdoor items indoors and secured loose objects, opting to shelter at home as the cyclone approaches. Lalor, living close to the shore, has chosen to ride out the storm at her property, with her partner strategically bunkered down at another location to monitor both homes.

Family concerns also weigh on Lalor, as her adult daughter was unable to return to the island before the water taxis ceased operations due to the weather. Instead, her daughter is currently in South West Rocks, amidst flood evacuation warnings. As Lalor waits for Cyclone Alfred, her anxiety extends beyond her immediate surroundings; she remains in touch with family and friends across Queensland, worried for their safety.

Local authorities and emergency services have been vigilant, assisting residents with storm preparations. The community has rallied in support of one another, demonstrating a spirit of togetherness and resilience as they brace for the storm’s impact. Lalor believes this solidarity will be crucial in the recovery efforts following the cyclone, as residents will need to join forces to clear debris and begin repairs.

Despite the community’s resolve, Lalor harbours a deep-seated unease about the storm’s path and its potential to cause significant destruction. Locals have been warned to prepare for severe weather conditions, including damaging surf, heavy rainfall, and potential flooding. “We kind of know what’s coming,” Lalor stated, “but I still just feel like the worst is yet to come.”
